The Manchester based startup, Next Step Nutrition is dedicated to helping you reach your full potential through food. Whether you want to lose weight, gain muscle, improve your sports performance or general health.
Next Step Nutrition is the brainchild of Founder, Jonny Landels, who wanted to offer real nutritional advice that works – no quick fixes or top 10 tips. Jonny has previously held the Head Coach position of 2 notable Crossfit gyms in the UK. Reebok Crossfit Thames, London and Train Manchester have both benefitted from his expertise. In 2016, The Creative Donut was approached by Jonny to help him create the branding and website to match his vision.
When working with new startups that require the full package – Branding, Web Design, Website Development & Launch. We like to start with the logo. This enables the client to visualise their business and start working on building a social media presence.
Initially we worked on a concept of “Back to basics” and “Elements/Foundations”. Which inspired us to design a logo using rudimental shapes to represent letters. The client wasn’t a fan and found this too geometric for his tastes. He also provided the feedback: “probably a bit more conventional and boring than your taste (sorry!) i’m a sucker for bold simple writing – however I think that works well with my company’s message of no bull shit and no gimmicks”
After a further discussion about brands he liked and understanding his vision a little more, we developed 3 ideas using clean font types with abstract lines to frame the logo.
With the color palette, we spent time playing with different colour gradients of 2 colors to represent the 2 specialisms of Next Step – Nutrition & Fitness. Jonny’s favourite color is red, so this was always a top contender. The red/purple gradient that proved popular in the end was the product of experimentation with “calming” the vibrancy of the red and finding a complementing yet vibrate colour in the red/blue spectrum.
We then used this gradient overlaid on photos and icons to create a constant palette across the brand. We built around the vision of hard work, dedication and strength for the header photo of the lioness.
When designing the Next Step Nutrition website we were keen to experiment with a different style layout to really make the navigation and logo pop. The navigation bar on the left is a permenant feature that remains as you scroll. This offered a larger space to display the logo, social media icons and have the contact button always on display.
Jonny is also a huge fan of blogging! Text, pictures, links & videos galore! As such, it was important we had an easy to use blog function that displayed media well.
This was a really exciting project to work on. As a keen fitness enthusiast myself, it was interesting to take an early-stage idea and create a brand for the client.
A few weeks after launch, Jonny was playing with the idea of releasing some content that was a little larger than a blog. As a supported client of The Creative Donut we helped him brainstorm the best mechanism for this. Jonny went off to write the content for his first recipe eBook and we built the mechanism for the website. It is now used as a freebie in exchange for signing up to his email list. This is a great way of increasing your online audience.
“Professional the entire process from start to finish. Always on hand to video call to ensure that I was involved within the process and the vision was shared between us and I was happy with the product. Cannot fault the final product or the service throughout – highly recommended!”
