Established 14 years ago by current owner Rob Fox following completion of his qualifications and apprenticeship as a Tree Surgeon & Climber. Mid 2017, The Creative Donut was asked to rebrand the locally know ‘Fox’ logo and undertake design & development of a new website to showcase their work.
Initially, The Creative Donut was instructed to review the current website and suggest ideas for a redesign. The client was very keen to modernise the website, reinforce the brand and create a website that could be used to drive business for the company. However, when we actually started brainstorming, it became apparent that the current branding would look out of place and dated on a modern website.
This was an interesting branding project as the Fox logo is very well known locally and the blue was incorporated into all signage, vehicles, marketing, and uniforms. The client was happy to redesign the logo, under the proviso that we respected the current logo and kept to the same colour palette. In doing this, Foxes are able to keep their current signage and uniforms, updating them for the new branding only when needed.
As you can see from the various itterations below, we updated the font style, designed a custom Fox and expanded the color pallete to 3 shades of blue.
When designing the website layout for Foxes Tree Services, it was key for this site to be functional rather than conceptual. Potential clients looking to organise services need to see a handful of components in order to make that important decision of clicking the “Contact Us” button. If you can satisfy each of these needs in a simple and clear fashion the user can click the button at any stage, without having to view information they don’t require.
As you can see from the layout design, we focused on providing the visitor with answers to the following:
Do you offer the service I want?
Why should I use your business?
Who can recommend you?
Have you done a similar project to mine?
How easy is it to contact you?
Each project brings its own challenges because each business, client and specification is different. Indeed one of our favorite things about working in website design is learning about the subject matter and our clients business drivers. Which in turn helps us devise a custom solution for you.
Now with Foxes Tree Services, Newbury, I was aware of most of the business drivers having previously designed for Electrical Engineers, Waste Management, Landscape Gardeners etc. However where I was a little (very) light was my knowledge of the subject matter. No one would ever refer to me a “green fingered”. Indeed I recently managed to kill a cactus and a chili pepper plant in the same month…apparently every time I need a drink the plants don’t also need to be watered…who knew!
The site layout was very much guided by the business drivers and future goals as discussed with the client. However, with the photography, we wanted to use a mixture of stock images for backgrounds and client photos in a gallery and when discussing case studies. As a designer, I was keen to keep all the header photos in a familiar theme. However finding a number of photos of different types of trees, yet similar is shot style was more difficult than we initially anticipated. We were very happy with our first draft until the client pointed out that the type of trees we had featured were not native to Britan – and before you ask, no it wasn’t a palm tree! Our second draft used a stylised shot where there camera was on the ground facing the sky. However after about a week of looking at these photos whilst developing the site, they just didn’t sit right with us.
Once the website was complete and ready to launch, we contacted the client and all agreed that the photography just didn’t sit right with the design. That night I spent 6 hours researching “native trees to the British Isles” and trawling the internet. By morning we had a shortlist that was then compressed, touched-up with photoshop and ready for discussion with the client.
The client was very happy with the website and all the support we provided behind the scenes. Rob & Anna were particularly pleased with our friendly customer approach and openness to brainstorming ideas helping visualise the results we wanted.
