At the beginning of 2016 The Creative Donut developed the branding and first website for The Legal Beagle (read about the first project here). As with most startups, The Legal Beagle’s service offer had pivoted and changed since we produced the first website. This is normal. Essentially once you have tested the market for a year, you will have a much better idea of what the market requires as your audience reacts to your initial service offer.
Mid 2017, The Creative Donut was initially asked to integrate an events management system. However upon further discussion as to the growth and (most importantly) shift in target audience our remit was expanded to a redesign.
When we developed the first website, The Legal Beagle was still a concept in Julian’s head. At this stage, he viewed his market as recently qualified lawyers looking to study abroad and expand their career prospects. In addition (and as is normal for a startup) there were a few extra add-on services that we thought would be good to list on the site. At this stage, we had the initial concept but obviously wanted to “spread the net wide”. Basically, we wanted to be informative so as to not leave any “money on the table” or lose potential business. As you can see, the website was designed to offer a feeling of being new, modern, relaxed and approachable, as the initial concept was to undertake 1-to-1 lessons in coffee shops, co-working spaces and relaxed environments. To mirror this theme we used happy orange colors, rounded buttons, and photography of casual meetings taking place. In addition with the name having a touch of humor attached and our relaxed image, obviously, we didn’t want to come across as unprofessional to our professional audience. To counter this we use a more traditional font type in the branding.
However one year on, many lessons were learned and the company underwent a number of small changes that led to further opportunities. One of which was Julian co-authoring a Legal English book.
Another came out of necessity, when meeting clients on a 1-to-1 basis it simply took too much time to travel from client to client. To counter the downtime spent in traveling, Julian realized that the future was to contract directly with law firms in the city to teach at their offices to larger groups. This cut down the overheads of travel tickets, time wasted and the endless stream of Starbucks coffees!
As a result of The Legal Beagles new approach to new business acquisition, its primary audience shifted from the individual lawyer to law firm partners and HR departments. Whilst obviously still remaining relevant and focused on the individual lawyer for creating awareness and word-of-mouth marketing.
In addition to the redesign, the new site boasts a number of new features including:
Expanded services section with relevent blog posts
Events calendar, Google Maps and Course management
Revised Contact page
As the Legal Beagle continues to grow and evolve, the website and its content must grow and evolve too. This is a lesson for all startups that are still finding their place in the market and reacting to customer needs.
The client was very pleased with the resulting website redesign, updates, and content changes. This was a really interesting project for The Creative Donut. Normally when we are asked to undertake a website redesign it is on a website created some years ago by another designer. Redesigning our own work for a different audience was a fantastic experience and pushed us creatively.
“I just wanted to thank you for the excellent job you have done on our website redesign to meet my businesses changing needs. I am very pleased with the new style. You made it a pleasure to work with you from the initial conversation of the businesses evolution, and concept of the redesign, through to the final roll out of the site. The part I enjoyed best was your professionalism and your enthusiasm to help my business succeed. I have been pleased to continue to use your services to monitor and tweak my website to make it indeed a valuable asset for my business.”
