Oakwood Climbing Centre, based in Bracknell, Berkshire is a premium climbing facility housing the UK’s largest competition standard bouldering wall. Opened in February 2017, Oakwood is fast becoming the training centre of choice for our hopeful 2020 Olympic Athletes.
In July 2016, The Creative Donut was asked to help with creating the social media, landing “coming soon” page, web design and developing the centres online booking website.
Back in July 2016 went we started on the project, the new climbing centre in Bracknell was little more than a warehouse with some wooden fames. Fast forward a few weeks, and team had the help of internationally renowned climbing wall builders and route setters. Once the paint had started to go on the walls it became an inspiration for us. The team sent us pictures of the build that we color sampled to create a bright “kid friendly” palette.
Since the Kids Parties is a big revenue generator for these centres, it was key that the palette be bright, playful and engaging without over saturating the page. This is why we spent a long time fine tuning the balance between the bright colors, vibrant photos and white space.
At The Creative Donut, web design always starts with building a sitemap. For the Oakwood Climbing Centre project we visualised providing information for 3 types of customer – The Experienced Climber, The Novice Adult & The Kids Party Goer. Firstly this was noted on the sitemap, later we expanded the details on these bullet points of information to create the content and copy.
We developed a layout that was both attention grabbing and modern. Providing just the right balance of usability and interesting design features, including sideways parallax sections to create depth within the images and an auto-play video header.
To create both a beautiful website and a functional system for the Oakwood Climbing Centre, we integrated Rock Gym Pro, a dedicated climbing centre management system used the world over. This allowed the centre to create and manage lessons, parties and provides a full membership management system. In addition, we integrated RGP’s e-Waiver system to save time when attending the centre…no more cues filling forms in!
This was a really interesting project to work on. We worked closely with the team for 8 months to produce a website that can be used for marketing, advertising, social media and booking management. A lot of integration work and fine tuning the user experience. But a clean easy-to-navigate, clutter free website was the result.
